About Us
WHERE IT STARTED
Storyland: The Bronx Book Haven, was born out of a shared passion for education and a desire to address the literacy gap in the Bronx. Our founders – a former educator, an author, a grandmother, and a community supporter – was moved by the fact that 70% of students in the Bronx do not read proficiently. Recognizing the lack of community resources, we decided to create a space partner with parents and educators to supplement neighborhood schools’ literacy efforts.
We recognize that community input is important in supporting alignment and maximizing collective impact on area needs. That is also why the structure of our staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors reflects a microcosm of the diversity in the borough. Our board and staff are the community. Our Executive Director, Sulma Arzu-Brown is a resident of the Bronx, and one-third of our board members reside in the Bronx and are active in local schools, businesses, and organizations.
