How Storyland: The Bronx Book Haven Is Tackling Childhood Literacy—And How You Can Help

In the heart of The Bronx, where vibrant cultures and resilient communities define the landscape, one book lounge is rewriting the story of childhood literacy. Established in October 2024, Storyland: The Bronx Book Haven isn't just a place to read—it's a movement. Kids walk in onto a red carpet, listen to authors share their stories, and leave with books in their hands and confidence in their voices.

STORYLAND: The Bronx Book Haven is a designated Reading Hub

The DOE designated "reading hubs" are part of the NYC Reads initiative. These Hubs are more than just a place to pick up a book— they’re places to connect families, communities and schools with one another and encourage a culture of reading in daily life.

Celebrating young authors at STORYLAND.

Showcasing the books of young authors and recognizing their achievement is a key focus for STORYLAND: The Bronx Book Haven. Here are three authors that shared their books with our CLASS TRIP students.

Ennio:

Ennio shared his first comic book-Ground Teeth-Volume 1. He inspires young children by showing that they can write stories and their family can help. Ennio shared how to do comic book illustration.

Sisters, Runessa and Rulianna:

Runessa authored Fun Times with Mom, sharing special memories and stories to celebrate the bond between a mother and a daughter. Younger sister, Rulianna, wrote her book Excited for School to help other kids feel happy and confident about starting school. Students created Thank You cards and various lists.
